April 30, 2007LibraryThing and collection development
April 30, 2007I would imagine that most people have at least heard of LibraryThing. I have started to use it for my department: Grad Ed. For collection development, I am on the GSE Library Task Force which has members from each unit of Grad Ed: MAED, MAT, Continuing Studies, Environmental Education and ESL. Each unit is allotted an equal amount of money each year to order materials. For this year, and at the suggestion of one of my Tech Services colleagues, I am using LibraryThing as a way to display the items they have ordered and have been added to the collection. Usually, they place their orders on ugly yellow cards which really do not describe the item in question. All they really get back is a title, author, ISBN, and an LC call number. LibraryThing provides much more, such as reviews and item information through Amazon, and allows me to put in the call number when it becomes available. I have created an account for each area and will have it displayed for several months, until we start ordering for next years budget.
So far the response from the task force has been positive. They can share these accounts with the rest of their units and also make use of the “recommendations”. Unfortunately, L.T. does not catalog audio/visual materials so they will still have to rely on the order cards for those items.

April 16, 2007I was going to get on here and start talking about my day so far, but I get up to my room and find out that there was school shootings at Virginia Tech and there is a reported death toll at 30 . Unbelievable.
